Our Montessori Classrooms

   

The Montessori system of education is named for Dr. Maria Montessori, who was both a physician and pioneer in early childhood development and education. She developed her philosophy and methods in the early 1900s in Italy, and her approach has been proven effective with literally millions of children the world over for nearly a century. Among the key Montessori principles:  

  • Children are different from adults, as well as from each other.
  • Children possess an unusual sensitivity and ability to learn from their environment.
  • Every child has a deep love for learning and need for purposeful work. Through work a child develops abilities, personality, and potential, including mental, physical and psychological powers.
  • While a child needs adults to provide exposure to learning opportunities, it is the child who directs his or her response to those opportunities.

    Johnson County Montessori Preschool has four classrooms, each with a full complement of Montessori equipment, with a teacher-to-child ratio of 1:10 or 1:12, depending on the room.
